Why Flexibility is the Missing Piece in Your Fitness Routine

Flexibility is the range of motion in your joints and muscles, and it’s something we often lose as we age. But you don’t need to be a gymnast to benefit from a flexibility routine. Simple stretches and mobility exercises can go a long way toward improving your posture, reducing stiffness, and increasing your overall movement capabilities.
Start by incorporating some dynamic stretches before your workouts. These are active movements, like leg swings or arm circles, that help to loosen up your muscles and prepare them for the workout ahead. Prepping your body this way improves circulation and prevents injuries by giving your muscles a gentle warm-up.
Post-workout stretching is just as important. After a tough session, static stretches—where you hold a position for 20-30 seconds—are great for lengthening muscles that have contracted during your workout. Focus on areas like your hamstrings, calves, chest, and shoulders, which tend to tighten up after strength or cardio sessions. This type of stretching not only increases your flexibility but also promotes better recovery by reducing soreness and improving blood flow to the muscles.
